Description

Fazal Ali is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the UK since 2004 with a special interest in Knee Surgery. His subspecialist interests include Sports Injuries in adults and children and the management of the Young Arthritic Knee.

He did his Orthopaedic training in Sheffield. He also did a Knee Fellowship in Newcastle and a short Trauma Fellowship in New York.

He is a faculty member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA) . In Sept 2016 he was elected to the Board of BOSTAA .

Fazal Ali’s work includes the management of all aspects of sporting injuries to the knee using modern techniques and equipment. A significant proportion of his practice deals with the young patient with knee arthritis using techniques including computer navigation guidance and cartilage filling procedures. He also works at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital helping to look after children with sporting injuries to the knee and has helped set up a ‘Complex Knee Service’ for adolescents and children.

He presently serves as an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board in the FRCS (Tr&Orth) exam and am on the Question writing committee. He is an examiner for the first JCIE International exam to be held in Qatar. In 2015, I hosted the FRCS (Tr&Orth) examinations in Chesterfield.

He published the chapter “Introduction to clinical examination technique” for the third edition of Postgraduate Orthopaedics. The candidates guide to the FRCS(Tr&Orth) Examination

He has given invited lectures on Training issues and on Knee Surgery both nationally and internationally. He has co-edited ‘Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics’ which is a best-selling orthopaedic text and is presently being launched in Chinese . He is also the founder in 2007 of the largest clinical examination course worldwide: The Chesterfield and Sheffield FRCS Clinical course. He still is actively involved in this.

With regards to education he is Undergraduate Tutor for the University of Sheffield and up to recently, Deputy Programme Director for the Yorkshire and Humber Postgraduate Orthopaedic Training Rotation. He was in charge of South Yorkshire trainees.

For his input into registrar training he has been voted South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainer of the Year on five occasions ( 2005,2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011) He was given a life-time award for training by the South Yorkshire training scheme in 2012. In 2011 and 2012 he was nationally recoganised by BOTA ( British Orthopaedic Trainees Association) as one of the top trainers in the UK. In 2017 he was honoured by the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training Rotation by the creation of an annual award: The ‘Fazal Ali Award for Academic Excellence’.

Mr Ali serves on the board of examiners in other countries including the University of the West Indies where he has been the external examiner since 2014.
